You may be out of oil or experiencing problems with your furnance.  To troubleshoot, please check the following...

1. Set your thermostat to a higher temperature setting, such as 90 degrees, to see if your furnace will start.

2. If the furnace doesn't start, check the fuel level in your tank by checking the gauge, however some gauges wear out over time and become inaccurate. If you know you have used oil and the gauge hasn't moved you might get it to work by pushing on the rod inside the site glass. The site glasses are designed to screw off. The only true way to know the amount of fuel in the tank is to stick the tank for the inches of fuel. If the tank has an opening insert a broomstick or some other rod that the oil will show on. Measure the inches of fuel and use the tank chart which will give you the gallons for a normal 275 gallon heating oil tank. For example, 15 inches of fuel in a vertical h/o tank has 86 gallons of fuel.

The one method that has proven NOT to be an accurate measure of fuel is “knocking on the tank.” No matter how much fuel is in the tank it will sound hollow or empty. Don't rely on “knocking on the tank” to keep you from running out of fuel. Let our experience and dedication keep you from running out.
